Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co.: Providing Hands-On Experience in Higher Education Across Western Pennsylvania

Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co. is dedicated to providing hands-on O&P experience to students in higher education across Western Pennsylvania, particularly in the greater Pittsburgh area. We are excited to offer educational in-services, workshops, and practical experiences for local college and university students.

We collaborate with schools to set up on-site workshops at our Union O&P lab facilities, and we also enjoy visiting campuses to engage with students and faculty directly.

Recently, we have conducted prosthetic workshops in partnership with Gannon University, Chatham University, and Slippery Rock University.

Gannon University

Clinical Director of Prosthetics and Adult Orthotics, Peter Leimkuehler, along with Adam Kiser, CPO, visited the third-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students at Gannon University. They shared their expertise and insights on various topics, including lower extremity prosthetics, K levels, techniques, and more.

Chatham University

We were thrilled to host Chatham University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program for an upper extremity prosthetics workshop. The event offered a hands-on experience that included topics such as fabrication, equipment, and devices. Participants engaged in valuable discussions and demonstrations with our prosthetists, highlighting the crucial role that physical therapists play in the patient care process.

Slippery Rock University

The Union Orthotics & Prosthetics Co. office in Cranberry, PA, hosted a prosthetics in-service featuring Dr. Amanda Young and students from the Slippery Rock University Adapted Physical Activity (SRUAPA) program.

During the event, Union O&P Practitioners and Technicians discussed various types of prosthetic devices and demonstrated test sockets for the SRUAPA students. They also provided a demonstration of the lamination and vacuum processes for creating test sockets.

A special guest speaker, Mark Stauber, a bilateral below-knee amputee, shared his experiences with the students. He spoke about different aspects of living with prosthetics and showcased his abilities both indoors and outdoors.
