Lower Limb Prosthetics

The majority of lower limb amputations are in the 60 and older population caused secondarily due to vascular diseases such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease.  The second leading cause is trauma which occurs in the young male population.  Other causes may be tumors, congenital malformations and other diseased.

Lower Limb Levels of Amputation

Partial Foot

Treatment for partial foot amputees usually just requires a toe filler which will allow footwear to fit properly as well as the filler providing support for weight bearing.

Chopart/Lisfranc Amputation

These amputations which occur at the mid foot or hind foot usually require added support across the ankle joint to the calf.

Symes Amputation

A Symes amputation occurs through the ankle joint.  The tibia and fibula bones of the lower leg are fully intact.

Transtibial or Below Knee

Below knee amputations are the most common.  Componentry includes a foot, ankle joint, pylon, socket and suspension system.

Knee Disarticulation

A knee disarticulation is amputation through the knee joint.

Transfemoral or Above Knee

Transfemoral amputations involve careful consideration because it involves two joints, the knee and ankle.  Componentry selection is critical for optimal outcome.

Hip disarticulation/Hemipelvectomy

These amputations which are through the hip or pelvis ar.  Suspension usually requires a waist belt.
