Helping Baby Adjust

Our cranial remolding orthoses are custom fabricated utilizing the STARscanner digital scan of the infants head.  This ensures the orthosis fits and functions appropriately for comfort and effectiveness.  The cranial remolding takes place as the child grows, therefor no pressure is exerted on the skull.  The helmet gently holds the bossed areas while providing room for the child to grow and 'catch up' at the flattened areas.

The infant will not need an adjustment period.  The infants take to the helmets surprisingly well according to most parents.  There is a five day weaning in period in order to ensure the helmet fits properly and does not cause skin breakdown.  During this time, the parent is responsible for monitoring skin redness and ensure that it fades when the helmet is removed.

Parent's FAQ's

How do I clean the orthosis?

The STARband cranial remolding orthosis is made with foam and plastic.  Allergies to the materials is rare, but other skin issues can occur due to bacteria.  Is is essential that the helmet is cleaned with soap and water daily.  Rubbing alcohol may be used in addition.

There should be areas of redness at the contact areas, but the redness should at least fade within 1 hour after helmet removal.  If redness persists, the helmet may need an adjustment, or there may be a dermatological issue.  The most common dermatological issues are contact dermatitis, which is similar to diaper rash and athletes foot.  This usually clears up on its own with some time out of the helmet.  The best option is to contact your practitioner to determine a plan.

Will my baby be hot with the orthosis?

The helmet will cause the child to be warm for the initial week until they naturally adjust.  During this time, dress the baby lightly and monitor their cheeks for flushing.  If you notice they are exposed to excessive temperatures or are overheating, you may remove the helmet for 15 minutes to allow them to cool.

If your child develops a fever, of 100 degrees or above, remove the helmet until the fever has subsided.

Will the orthosis affect my baby's hair growth?

Cranial remolding orthoses do not affect hair growth temporarily or permanently.  The orthoses does not rub, so the hair is not affected.

How long will my baby have to wear the orthosis?

On average we see wear time from 4-7 months.  This depends on a few factors, some of which are goals and expectations of family, age and severity.  The younger the child, the quicker they improve.  This may not necessarily mean shorter wear time, but may mean greater overall improvements.  The older the child is, the slower they grow.  Some parents choose to be done with helmet use do to lack of potential growth and further improvements.  The decision to be done with helmet will be discussed with your practitioner and/or prescribing physician.

Will my insurance cover a cranial remolding orthosis?

We see coverage from 0% to 100%.  It is best to call your insurance and see if there are any exclusions in your specific plan.  Cranial remolding orthoses fall under a sub category of orthotics and prosthetics which are under the category durable medical equipment.  The device code is S1040.  Contact our main office and ask for a cranial remolding billing specialist for further questions.
